    All materials are included in the cost of the workshop Keeping a sketchbook is like keeping a diary but this diary is a visual record of all your ideas. We will explore a multitude of techniques and materials including collage, paint, fabric and stitch. This workshop is designed to take away the fear of the blank page! Day one - Collage is a very important technique in textiles as it gives us the opportunity to explore shape, proportion and texture. We will also work with stitch both on paper and fabric. Day two - I am thrilled to welcome the artist Julie Sajous to the studio for day two of this workshop who will be covering colour and how we can develop our use of it within our textile work. We will be looking at basic colour theory and how we create shades and match colours. We will be working with acrylic which as we can use with a fabric medium is also incredibly useful not just for our sketchbooks but also for further work on fabric At the end of the two days you will take with you the beginnings of a journal that will inspire your future work whether it is a quilt, a wall piece, a cushion or a dress.     Embroidery is a skill that transfers into so many textile disciplines. You can embroider onto clothing or table linen; you can use it in quilting and pictures. On this workshop you will create a set of samples whilst learning a host of stitches. On the second day we will explore the Japanese stitch Sashiko, often seen in white thread on indigo fabric. You will learn how to transfer your design onto the fabric and experiment with different threads.

    All materials and thread are included in the cost of the workshop. Free hand machine embroidery allows your imagination to run wild whether figurative or abstract. You will learn all the tricks of the trade including layering with thread and using dissolvable fabric. We will also create a quilted sample. Discover a real freedom in stitch and create at least 4 beautiful samplers in the process. This is a beautiful way of creating pattern and detail in both dressmaking and the textile arts.

    All materials and dyes are included in the cost of the workshop. Learn to work with procion dyes both in liquid form and also using them as a paste to be able to paint with. We will explore using rust to achieve beautiful colour. We will be block printing, stencilling, painting and blending. You will spend the three days working with colour on a variety of natural fabrics . By the end of the workshop you will go away with a sample book and the confidence to use these techniques again. All techniques are safe to use at home. You will need to be ok wearing rubber gloves and a cotton face mask for some of the work.

    All materials and dyes are included in the cost of the workshop. This workshop will show you ways of working with a screen that takes away the formality of traditional screenprinting. We will work with ways of creating temporary resists to achieve either specific images or create texture and layering for backgrounds. The techniques are wonderful for textile artists and creating your own fabric for dressmakers.

    I am delighted to welcome Sarah Lloyd to the barn to teach this two day workshop. Sarah is a fantastic embroiderer and a great teacher. If you have previously been on the beginners embroidery workshop then this is going to be a brilliant follow on workshop. On this two day workshop you will learn how to use hand stitching to add texture and three dimensional elements to your creative work. Covering both drawn thread techniques and variations on some traditional stitches, you will explore ways to develop your hand stitching skills. Samples will be worked on linen using cotton perlé and stranded thread. If you would like to bring your own stand and frame we are happy for you to do so although all equipment for the workshop will be provided. As this workshop will involve detailed work and manipulation of threads please remember to bring your reading glasses and any additional magnification that you may require!!

    This three day workshop will cover the principles of piecing fabric from traditional quilting blocks to contemporary piecing including curves and layers. We will learn to work with the rotary cutter and cutting boards and learn about glue basting for added accuracy! We will also cover the basics of quilting both on the machine and hand quilting.
