Doggie Coat

All the notions needed to make this stunning designer doggie coat are provided in this workshop including a pattern. You will need to bring an appropriate size towel for your dog! in this 1 day workshop you will make a practical and stylish towelling robe for your dog. The pattern will suit all sizes of dogs from a tiny Chihuahua to a large Labrador. The robes outer fabric and inner lining are towelling to help your dog dry out after they've been in the rain, dipped in for a swim or need a bath after a soak in the muddiest puddle they could find. The robe has a tie belt and velcro fastening at the neck. We'll provide the pattern, notions and trims all you need to do is bring along a towel to two to make the robe. This month the dressmaking workshops will all be using the wonderful designs of Marcy Tilton. Based in Oregon, USA, Marcy designs patterns for Vogue which are fabulous, wearable garments with lots of design detail.

Marcy’s love of sewing comes through in her designs, curved seam lines, A-symmetrical hemlines, different darts and tucks, unusual pocket details and seam finishes all make for exciting original garments.

We have chosen a mix of patterns using various fabrics so if you are looking for an unusual design, would like to learn new techniques or work with a difficult fabric there is something for everyone.

Couture clothes hang beautifully and last for years, they may take longer to make but it is always worth taking the time, especially if you have beautiful fabric. On this workshop you will learn all the skills needed to create a perfectly fitted and finished couture skirt. You will first make a toile which will be altered to fit your figure, next learn about interlining, correct interfacings, zips, waistbands, fastenings and all the hand stiches needed for a couture finish to your garment. Creating a classic lined winter coat which will last a life time is a major project. The course will run over three days, 1 week apart and there will be an initial consultation to discuss patterns. The first week you will make a calico toile and carry out fittings. You will need to choose your fabric , we are happy to give you advice if required. The reason for the fabric not being included in the cost of the workshop, as we would normally do, is that we think to make this commitment you will want to be very specific about the fabric you choose. You may want cashmere or wool or even fur! but it needs to be your choice. We will have a selection of fabric for you to choose at varying price levels or alternatively you are welcome to bring your own. There will also be a large choice of patterns for you to choose from, all selected so they can be completed in the three days but will require homework. Included in the cost is attendance at stitch cafe on 30th January, 3rd & 10th February for those who don't want to work alone or don't have the equipment at home. Shibori is the Japanese art of resist dying using binding, folding, stitching and twisting to create beautiful fabrics. Kanoko shibori is similar to tie-dye but the Japanese have developed many more techniques to create incredibly beautiful patterns. Traditionally the dye used with this technique is Indio and we will be working with an organic Indigo dye vat to achieve the beautiful hues. You will also learn how to prepare and look after an Indigo dye vat at home By the end of the day you will have a stash of samples and notes giving you the confidence to continue to expand this technique. I am delighted to welcome Juliet Ferry from Hand and Lock to the barn to teach Tambour Beading. Hand and Lock are expert practitioners of this embroidery technique popular on international catwalks and seen in shows by designers such as Elie Saab and Oscar De La Renta. Tambour beading also known as Lunéville or Crochet de Lunéville is a French Haute Couture technique where beads or sequins can be attached to a fabric. The embroidery is done with a special hook working through a fabric stretched tight as a drum. Over the two days, you will learn how to create a design, set up a full size frame and find out how to work the hook through the fabric without catching and then go on to learn technique. Overcome your fear of zippers in this practical skills workshop! You’ll learn to insert a regular zip, a concealed zip (look like a pro when you make dresses or cushion covers!). You will learn all the tricks of the trade including layering with thread and using dissolvable fabric. We will also create a quilted sample. Discover a real freedom in stitch and create at least 4 beautiful samplers in the process. The cost of the workshop includes all patterns, materials and notions, and of course coffee, tea and plenty of biscuits! Shibori is the Japanese art of resist dying using binding, folding, stitching and twisting to create beautiful fabrics. Kanoko shibori is what we would term as tie-dye but the Japanese developed many many more techniques to create incredibly beautiful patterns. On this course you will learn many of the techniques and how to prepare the dyes. All the dyes we prepare will be safe to use at home.
