Creating a classic lined winter coat which will last a life time is a major project. The course will run over three days, 1 week apart and there will be an initial consultation to discuss patterns. The first week you will make a calico toile and carry out fittings. You will need to choose your fabric , we are happy to give you advice if required. The reason for the fabric not being included in the cost of the workshop, as we would normally do, is that we think to make this commitment you will want to be very specific about the fabric you choose. You may want cashmere or wool or even fur! but it needs to be your choice. We will have a selection of fabric for you to choose at varying price levels or alternatively you are welcome to bring your own. There will also be a large choice of patterns for you to choose from, all selected so they can be completed in the three days but will require homework. Included in the cost is attendance at stitch cafe on 30th January, 3rd & 10th February for those who don't want to work alone or don't have the equipment at home. Sashiko iss a form of decorative stitching from Japan. Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places or tears with patches, this running stitch technique has now developed into a decorative stitch form. The white cotton thread on the traditional indigo blue cloth gives sashiko its distinctive appearance, .This is a beautiful way to stitch and can be used in quilts, cushions and clothing. All materials are included in the cost of the workshop Keeping a sketchbook is like keeping a diary but this diary is a visual record of all your ideas. We will explore a multitude of techniques and materials including collage, paint, fabric and stitch. This workshop is designed to take away the fear of the blank page! Day one - A day of mark making and developing ways to notate our ideas. Collage is a very important technique in textiles as it gives us the opportunity to explore shape, proportion and texture. We will also work with stitch both on paper and fabric. Day two and three - I am thrilled to welcome the artist Julie Sajous to the studio for day two of this workshop who will be covering colour and how we can develop our use of it within our textile work. We will be looking at basic colour theory and how we create shades and match colours. We will be working with acrylic which as we can use with a fabric medium is also incredibly useful not just for our sketchbooks but also for further work on fabric At the end of the two days you will take with you the beginnings of a journal that will inspire your future work whether it is a quilt, a wall piece, a cushion or a dress. Kanoko shibori is similar to tie-dye but the Japanese have developed many more techniques to create incredibly beautiful patterns. Traditionally the dye used with this technique is Indio and we will be working with an organic Indigo dye vat to achieve the beautiful hues. You will also learn how to prepare and look after an Indigo dye vat at home By the end of the day you will have a stash of samples and notes giving you the confidence to continue to expand this technique.
